How do you know a subreddit's self-promotion policy?
We profile communities mechanically: the published rules and wiki are classified for self-promotion and link policies, and recent top posts are analyzed for the formats that actually survive and get upvoted. Each profile carries a last-checked date, and moderators always have the final say, so verify in the sub before posting anything that matters.
What does 'rules do not clearly say' mean?
About two in five communities take no explicit written position on self-promotion. That is not permission: unclear communities enforce norms through removals instead of rulebooks. The reliable read is enforcement, not legislation: sort by top, find builder posts, and study how the survivors framed themselves.
Why does the link policy matter so much?
Fewer than 3 in 10 communities we profile clearly permit links, and a URL from a young account is one of the most common automated removal patterns on Reddit. A plain-text mention is searchable, trips no rules, and the readers who search are the high-intent ones.
My subreddit isn't in the checker. Why?
